Tips for Successfully Managing Remote Team
Right now, Covid-19 has made working from home our new reality. Almost all companies are rethinking to continue to work from home and not going to back to office. It leads to team leaders and managers to manage remote team efficiently and be productive.
Although working from home ensures our safety and saves us from commuting, how can we overcome the challenge of efficiently managing a remote team?
1. Understand Team Member
First, we have to put ourselves in the shoes of our team members. We may often overlook that our team members do not have the tools they need to work, including high speed internet or proper computer. Therefore, we must try our best to provide them with the resources they need.
2. Communicate More
Once this is established, we must provide them with a proper method of communication available from their home. This may include, but is not limited to, Skype, slack, or zoom. Using this program, create a team to keep everyone on the same page. Set a time available for everyone to come together and give daily status updates. Try your best to schedule a video call at least once a week.
3. Create Involvement
Give the team members a complete overview of the project they are working on so they know how they fit in with everyone else. Getting the team involved this way will help them understand the big picture, motivating them to go beyond their assigned tasks.
4. Focus on Results
Next, keep your eyes on what your team members have delivered rather than how long they have worked. We must remember that everyone works at their own pace and in their own style.
5. Get Daily Status Update
Finally, make sure everyone sends clear status updates before they leave, including completed and pending work.
It is our responsibility as a team leader or manager to find an approach that works for our team with the collaboration tools to build a high performing virtual team. The company and employees are becoming comfortable with the remote working and this may be our new reality for long time.
Remote team management is successful when we are flexible, resourceful and transparent
